How can this guide help?

Real-life customers are your most valuable resource during product discovery.

They can tell you directly about their needs, problems and frustrations, how they use your product or any other similar products on the market and how they’d like to improve these products.

But if you want real, actionable insights, you need to know which specific questions to ask.

Our user research interview script gives you 21 tried-and-tested questions to help you understand your users, their needs, how they use your product and how it could be improved.

Which topics should your interview cover?

Want to get the most insight out of your research interview? Focus your chat on the following four areas:

  1. Who are your users? Ascertain your users’ roles and departments, industries and company size.
  2. What are their needs? Learn more about user pain points, how painful they really are, and which types of solutions they currently or would like to use.
  3. How and why did they seek out the product? Find out which pain points or jobs to be done (JTBD) made them seek out their existing solution, and what were they doing before that.
  4. How could the product be improved? Lastly, ask whether the solution helps with their pain points or JTBD and how it could be improved.
